Baku, Azerbaijan, October 23. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has reported a rise in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2023, as detailed in its latest Sustainable Development Report, Trend reports.
According to the data, SOCAR’s total GHG emissions for 2023 reached 8,367,450 tons of CO2 equivalent, a notable increase from 7,852,900 tons in 2022 and 7,537,700 tons in 2021. This growth can be attributed to both direct and indirect emissions.
Direct emissions in 2023 were reported at 7,112,700 tons of CO2 equivalent, a slight rise from 6,708,700 tons in 2022. Indirect emissions saw a more significant jump, reaching 1,254,750 tons, compared to 1,144,200 tons in the previous year.
The emissions are categorized by SOCAR’s operational segments, with the downstream segment contributing the highest at 4,129,470 tons of CO2 equivalent. The upstream operations followed with 3,743,200 tons, while the midstream segment contributed 401,730 tons. Additional SOCAR entities accounted for 93,030 tons.
