By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:
A factory for recycling of lead-acid batteries will be built in Azerbaijan, the Hi-Tech Park of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan told Trend.
The source said the scope of activity of the factory, which will operate in the Technopark as a full-fledged resident, will include the use of foreign experience in the collection and disposal of used batteries.
A number of countries, which are aware of the importance of collecting these wastes, have already taken important measures to eliminate them by collecting them in special containers. The reuse of lead-acids is based on the state strategy for hazardous waste management in Azerbaijan approved on August 25, 2004.
The source noted that the urgency of the problem of collecting used batteries is very clear, but the attractiveness of this activity is limited by a number of factors, the main of which is their low price.
According to the Hi-Tech Park's estimates, the price of one ton of used batteries is $450-500. More than one million used batteries are thrown out annually in Azerbaijan, which is equal to about 12,000 tons. Their recycling will allow to receive over 8,400 tons of lead, calcium, tin, more than 6,000 tons of polyethylene and polypropylene, as well as about 1,800 tons of alkali.
