Kyrgyz presidential elections will be held in 2009: Constitutional Court

The Kyrgyz presidential elections will be held on Oct. 25, RIA Novosti quoted the Kyrgyz Constitutional Court as saying.

Member of parliament from the Social Democratic Party Asilbek Zheenbekov asked the Constitutional Court to review the issue of the date of the upcoming presidential elections in February and requested an official interpretation of the Constitutional article on presidential elections as it is "difficult to understand."

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev came to power in the "Tulip Revolution" on March 24, 2005. He was elected president on July 10, 2005.

"As the president was elected in snap elections in July 2005 according to the 2003 Constitution, his term of office ends in October 2009," Kyrgyz Constitutional Court Chairman Svetlana Sadikova said.

She said the date of the presidential elections must be set by parliament.
