BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, February 20. Further preparation of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant (HPP) project in Kyrgyzstan includes the completion of the feasibility study (FS) and an environmental and social impact assessment, Trend reports via the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan.
Following this, a second round of consultations will be held with stakeholders at both the local and national levels in Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, consultations will take place in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. An updated version of the environmental and social impact assessment will also be prepared, incorporating feedback and recommendations received during these consultations.
The World Bank is financing the comprehensive preparation of this large-scale project, which includes updating the FS and conducting environmental and social impact assessments.
The updated feasibility study is being carried out by the Swiss engineering and consulting company AFRY, selected through a competitive bidding process in early 2024. Meanwhile, the international company SMEC is conducting the environmental and social impact assessment.
The Kambarata-1 HPP is a transformative green energy project that will bring significant benefits to Kyrgyzstan and the entire Central Asia region. It will enhance energy security and foster regional cooperation. The planned capacity of the plant is 1,860 MW, with an expected annual electricity production of 5.6 billion kWh. The construction of the Kambarata-1 hydropower plant is expected to take approximately 6.5 years.
