BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 17. China may provide a grant of over $41.4 million to Kyrgyzstan for the construction of a new checkpoint at Bedel, Trend reports via the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.

This proposal was discussed during a meeting between Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, and Xingrui Ma, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

The Chinese side had previously announced the provision of this grant during the state visit of Kyrgyzstan's President Sadyr Zhaparov to China in February of this year.

In addition, the talks highlighted that the modernization and full operational functionality of the "Torugart" and "Irkeshtam" checkpoints are crucial for boosting mutual trade between the two countries.

The discussions also focused on accelerating the implementation of previously agreed agreements regarding the opening of new air routes between Kyrgyzstan and China, specifically the "Urumqi—Osh" and "Kashgar—Osh" routes. The opening of these flights is expected to be a significant step in developing trade, tourism, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.

To note, during the state visit of Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov to China in February 2025, over 20 bilateral agreements were signed, marking a significant step in strengthening and expanding cooperation between the two nations.

In September of 2024, a temporary "Bedel" checkpoint began operating on the Kyrgyz-Chinese border. It is expected that the checkpoint will operate permanently and year-round starting in 2027, following the completion of the necessary infrastructure.
