BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 24. Iran considers the Farzad gas field—jointly shared with Saudi Arabia—to be of major strategic importance, Touraj Dehghani, head of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC), told reporters, Trend reports.
He noted that the development of this field is being given special attention, with plans in place to produce 28 million cubic meters of gas per day.
Dehghani highlighted the field’s offshore location, about 200 kilometers from Iran’s mainland, making it more remote than many of the country’s other fields.
“One of the drilling rigs required for operations at the Farzad gas field will soon be delivered to the country. The jacket structure for the rig is currently being constructed domestically. It is hoped that the rig will be installed soon, and drilling operations will begin. The production is expected to start next year, although studies on transporting the gas to land are still ongoing," he noted.
The Farzad gas field is a joint offshore resource shared between Iran and Saudi Arabia. On the Iranian side, the field is divided into two sections—Farzad A and Farzad B. In March 2024, the National Iranian Oil Company signed an agreement with Iran’s PetroPars Company to develop the Farzad B section.
Iran holds the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves, estimated at around 34 trillion cubic meters. At present, 22 gas fields are actively operational across the country.
