Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 20

By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Following an assasination of the Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov on Dec. 19, Iran closed down its consular offices in Turkey.

Thus far, the Islamic Republic has not made any decision with regards to re-opening of its consular offices.

All consular services in Iranian consulates in Turkey will remain closed until further notice, a staff with Iran’s Turkey embassy told Trend Dec. 20.

The Iranian embassy released a statement, calling on all the Iranians in Turkey to avoid visiting Iranian consular offices in Istanbul, Trabzon and Erzurum.

On Dec. 19 Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was fatally wounded by an armed gunman at an art gallery. The ambassador died later. Along with him, three other people got injured in the attack.

It should be noted that a group of people in the Turkish cities of Istanbul and Ankara have been staging demonstrations since Dec. 14 outside Iranian and Russian diplomatic missions, protesting against measures taken by Tehran and Moscow to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government as well as to protest the ongoing crisis in the Syrian city of Aleppo.
