Blasts hit Syrian capital, says opposition group

Several explosions were heard Sunday in Damascus, reported an opposition group, a day after 92 people - including 32 children - were killed in what activists called a massacre in Syria, DPA reported.

Several security personnel were reportedly injured in one of the bomb blasts, which hit their vehicle in the capital, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It gave no details about the other explosions.

Fierce clashes meanwhile erupted between military troops and opposition rebels in suburban Damascus, said the organization. It gave no casualty figures.

United Nations observers have confirmed that death toll on Saturday in the town of Houla at 92, of whom 32 were children. The opposition said the victims died from shelling by government forces.

The surge in violence came as UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan is due in Syria next week for talks on progress in implementing his plan to end 15 months of violence in the country.
