The Lebanese army has arrested at least six people, among them former army officers, on suspicion of spying for Israel, a Lebanese security source said Saturday.

The Lebanese army has arrested at least six people, among them former army officers, on suspicion of spying for Israel, a Lebanese security source said Saturday, DPA reported.

According to the source the arrested people were seized in southern and northern Lebanon last week, and are currently under questioning.

He said the six, which include two retired Lebanese Army officers, were suspected of submitting information about the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah to the Israeli intelligence service Mossad.

According to Lebanese media reports some of the arrested had sophisticated telecommunition devices in their houses.

On Wednesday, a Lebanese military prosecutor indicted three Lebanese for spying for Israel as part of an espionage investigation which started last year.

The Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, has called on the Lebanese government to impose the death penalty on any suspect convicted for spying for Israel.

In 2006, Hezbollah fought a devastating 33-day war with Israel Some 1,200 people, mostly Lebanese civilians, were killed along with 196 Israeli soldiers.
