Israel's Netanyahu, Mofaz pledge to push for peace talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Shaul Mofaz pledged Tuesday to try and revive peace negotiations with the Palestinians, making it a central goal of their new unity government, DPA reported.

In a news conference in Jerusalem, the two listed a total of four goals to be pursued over the next 18 months - passing Israel's next two-year budget; making a new law mandating equal military service for all; promoting electoral reforms; and reviving long-stalled peace talks.

They did not publicly list the issue of Iran's nuclear programme. All Mofaz said was that the unity government would cope with all security threats, "from any range," in a "measured and responsible manner."

The leader of the centrist Kadima party said he had made peace negotiations with the Palestinians an "iron condition" for entering Netanyahu's right-wing coalition. He urged the Palestinians to show "responsibility" and respond positively.
