A 69-year-old pensioner was arrested Monday by Italian police in connection with eight murders and several attempted killings committed in southern Sicily in the period 1998 to 2009 DPA reported.
Syracuse prosecutor, Ugo Rossi, said investigators were "certain" the man taken into custody, Giuseppe Raeli, was the so-called Monster of Cassibile.
The moniker refers to the village of Cassibile near Syracuse - an area where most of the murders were committed.
Several shotgun shells believed to have been fired by the gun used by the suspected killer were found in Raeli's garage, Rossi said.
Among the murders attributed to the Monster is the 2003 double slaying of a married couple, Sebastiano Tine and Giuseppa Spadaro. Their daughter was also injured in the attack.
Investigators say it is not clear what the exact motive behind the murders was, but they believe "greed" may have played a part.
