Russia is banning fish imports from Japan after radioactive water leaked into the sea near the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, the Russian agricultural supervisory body said on its website Wednesday, dpa reported.
The ban affects 242 fish processing plants across Japan's main island, Honshu, and was the result of an analysis of possible dangers after the nuclear disaster at the plant, the body said.
Radioactive caesium over the legal limit as well as iodine were this week detected in fish caught off Japan's north-eastern coast.
Russia imported 57,000 tons of fish and fish products from Japan in 2010.
