The Electoral Code provides the necessary legal basis to hold democratic and fair elections, ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary Ali Ahmedov told journalists today. The NAP official was commenting on an opposition initiative to amend the country's electoral legislation.
He said after the adoption of the Electoral Code in 2000, Azerbaijan has held several elections, and in practice, the law has "passed the test."
"All elections in Azerbaijan reflect the will of the Azerbaijani people and the people accept the election results. I think the legislation could not have been tested more," Ahmadov said.
Opposition parties want to improve the legislation as a means of ensuring transparent and democratic elections. NAP holds the majority seats in election commissions.
