By the end of the year, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) will determine the model and necessary technology as part of the project to renovate and modernize a SOCAR owned waste recycling center, a source at SOCAR said.

According to source, the project for modernization of the center is large and important in terms of recycling of waste by companies owned by the SOCAR.

In accordance with the feasibility study prepared by American MI-LLC Company, several options for conducting the work and organizing process have been presented. Currently, SOCAR is selecting the model.

"This procedure is quite long, since it is necessary to define the principle of work of the enterprise, the economic feasibility of processing of any specific types of waste. To all of this requires a balanced approach," said the source.

SOCAR Vice President for Ecology Rafiga Huseynzade said earlier that the sludge disposal landfill began operations in 1985 and is presently behind modern ecological standards. The decision for reconstruction began namely for this purpose.
The new center will focus on refining oil sludge and about 62 kinds of solid and industrial waste.

A contract for the feasibility report was signed by MI-LLC and SOCAR on May 20, 2010, for the purpose of rebuilding the waste utilization center.

The work is carried out under a grant agreement worth $572,000, signed between SOCAR and the U.S Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), signed on Aug.13.
