Kyrgyz deputy security chief resigns

Kyrgyzstan Materials 24 August 2011 23:20 (UTC +04:00)

First Deputy Chairman of the Kyrgyz State National Security Committee Marat Imankulov announced resignation Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

"I am resigning because I do not want to put up with corruption, regionalism and the threats of new revolutions," Imankulov told a press conference in Bishkek.

Another reason for this move "was the fact that the State National Security Committee has turned into a tool of pressure on political opponents and servicing of the current authorities," he said.

"I am setting an officer's precedent, when disagreement with the country's government policy will allow others to act in a similar way," Imankulov said.

As the head of the committee's anti-terrorist center and Kyrgyzstan's representative to the regional anti-terrorist center at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, he added he was aware of all possible threats and new challenges in the region.

Imankulov accused the head of the State National Security Committee Keneshbek Dushebayev of pressuring him and his relatives and wanting to prevent him from conducting an election campaign, according to Interfax.

Imankulov is one of the registered candidates for the presidential election to be held on Oct. 30.
