DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, November 23. Tajikistan aims to double its capacity for producing clean energy as a key pillar in advancing a "green" economy, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon said in a press briefing following his official visit to Russia, Trend reports.
He mentioned that Tajikistan boasts 13,000 glaciers, which account for 60 percent of Central Asia's water resources. In terms of total hydroenergy resources, the country ranks eighth globally and second in terms of per capita hydroenergy resources in the world.
"Today, Tajikistan generates 98 percent of its electricity through hydroelectric power plants, which are sources of 'green' energy. It is ranked sixth in the world in this regard. The country has the ability to host energy-intensive companies that use 'green' energy that has a low environmental impact," Rahmon said.
"Tajikistan is ready to develop constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia in these areas," the president added.
Currently, Tajikistan is actively pursuing the construction of its largest energy project, the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP). The government is set to initiate direct negotiations with potential investors to secure additional funding, aiming to complete the construction of the Rogun HPP by the end of this year.
Previously, the Saudi Arabian Fund for Development (SFD) pledged a $100 million concessional loan for the building of the Rogun HPP.
Once fully operational, the Rogun HPP is estimated to have an installed capacity of 3,600 MW, with annual power generation ranging from 13 to 17 billion kilowatt-hours.
