ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, October 19. The drinking water supply and wastewater programs of Turkmenistan face a lack of external investments despite active infrastructure development, the reports of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) said on drinking water supply and sanitation in Central Asia, Trend reports.
According to experts, the country will need to attract additional investments to achieve SDG six indicators and provide centralized water supply to 93 percent of urban and 82 percent of rural populations by 2025-2030.
According to the information, in the period from 2024 through
2030, Turkmenistan will need at least $500 million to modernize its
water supply assets and build new facilities, with a total
investment requirement of $4 billion.
If operation and maintenance costs are taken into account, this
amount could rise to $4.5 billion.
Meanwhile, Turkmenistan continues to implement large-scale projects aimed at improving access to clean drinking water and sanitation within the framework of the national program "Village."
To note, the EDB announced its intention to invest at least $400 million in Central Asia's water and energy sector over the next three years. According to EDB Board Chairman Nikolay Podguzov, successful resolution of existing problems in this area can increase the regional GDP growth rate by 1.5 percent per year and improve water use efficiency by 40 percent through the introduction of modern irrigation technologies and modernization of irrigation systems.
