Over 20,000 tons of shrimp have been produced in Iran during the current fiscal year (started March 20, 2016), secretary general of Iran's Fisheries Union, Ali Akbar Khodaei, said.
The figure indicates a rise by 3000 tons or 17.6 percent compared to the country's shrimp farming output during the same period of the preceding year, Khodaei said, Mehr news agency reported Jan. 24.
About 25,000 tons of shrimp is projected to be produced in Iran in the next fiscal year, which will start March 2017, he added.
Khodaei further said that Iran’s shrimp export stood at 9,000 tons in the first nine months of the current fiscal year (March 20-Dec. 21, 2016) compared to 7,800 tons of export in the same period of preceding year.
The value of the exported shrimp reached $40.5 million, meanwhile the figure was $34 million in the 9-month period of preceding year, he said.
He forecasted that 14,000 tons of shrimp will be exported in total during the current fiscal year (to end on March 2017).
Iran’s shrimp export in last fiscal year (ended March 2016) amounted to 12,500 tons, Khodaei said.
Russia is the main European target of Iran’s shrimp exports at the moment, he said.
Iran's shrimp farms are mainly located in southern Bushehr, Hormozgan, Khozestan provinces as well as northern Golestan province.
