Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her regret to Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday over the death of five Afghan soldiers in a friendly fire incident involving German troops.
The two leaders spoke over the phone, a German government spokesman said. Karzai expressed his condolences at the death of three Germans killed in a Taliban ambush, dpa reported.
Both incidents occurred on Friday when a German mine-clearing team came under fire in the northern province of Kunduz. Five German soldiers were seriously injured.
During the firefight five Afghan soldiers died when a German armoured vehicle fired at their unmarked cars after their drivers ignored a call to stop.
