Czech airspace open to high-altitude flyovers

Czech airspace opened to flyovers at altitudes higher than 7.45 kilometres early Monday, but has remained shut to flights in lower levels, including take-offs and landings, a spokesman for Czech air traffic controllers said.

The air traffic authorities are set to announce further steps at noon (1000 GMT), Richard Klima, a spokesman for the country's Air Navigation Services, said in a statement.

As elsewhere across Central Europe, Czech airspace has been closed since Friday due to ash spreading above the continent from an erupting volcano in Iceland. The closure has been extended several times, DPA reported.

Tens of thousands of travellers were forced to change their plans, including Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who took a train and a car to the Sunday state funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski in the southern Polish city of Krakow.
