Totally 253 women and 51 youngsters are among the arrested persons in Azerbaijan. The criminality rate has been reduced recently, Nazim Alakbarov, Deputy Justice Minister, told Trend.
He said that Azerbaijan legislation did not envisage life imprisonment to children and women. According to Mr. Alakbarov, if convicted children and women do not break up order in the correctional institutions, then issues on making their sentences easier are considered. On the base of conclusions made by the correctional institutions, their cases are passed to the court, and the latter ones, in their turn, make corresponding decisions.
As it was mentioned above, 51 juveniles are being kept in the correctional institutions of the country. Persons up to 18, sometimes up to 20 years oil are sent there. According to the official statistics, the number of crimes committed by children and women has been reduced. In accordance with the last Presidential Decree, 6 women and one juvenile were amnestied, said the Deputy Justice Minister.
He also said that starting from February, 2005, reforms have been continued in the penitentiary system. Mr. Alakbarov also said that according to the Presidential Decree of August 17, 2006, the Central Department for Court Decisions Execution was called the Penitentiary Service. After that, some staff changes occurred in the Ministry. Reforms are being continued, and the journalists who visited our institutions could confirm it. Our main purpose is to find the right way for all the prisoners. And we are doing it without violating their rights, said N. Alakbarov.
