ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 3. Kazakhstan will launch an interbank payment service using QR codes in July 2025, a major step in the digital transformation of its financial system to streamline transactions for individuals and businesses, said Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov during a meeting on the digital transformation of the economy, Trend reports.
The meeting concentrated on executing President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's directions regarding digital transformation, subsequent to a protracted government session conducted in February 2024.
Discussions also covered the introduction of the digital tenge, which is actively used to track government spending.
"A pilot project for digital tenge was launched in 2024, covering 250 billion digital tenge ($500 million). Each unit has a unique digital identifier, helping to track its use at every stage," the prime minister's press service stated.
In the course of the meeting, it was decided to continue expanding the digital financial infrastructure and develop legislative measures regulating the use of digital tools. The prime minister stressed the importance of transparency in public spending, particularly for businesses dealing with state funds.
"Digital tenge will give us the ability to monitor where public funds are spent and ensure full transparency," Olzhas Bektenov emphasized.
The launch of the interbank QR code payment service in 2025, alongside the continued development of digital tenge, represents crucial steps toward modernizing Kazakhstan's financial system and combating corruption.
