TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, May 19. Representatives of the water management and energy authorities of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan discussed the operating regime of the Bahri-Tojik reservoir for the period from June through August 2026, Trend reports via the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan.
The talks focused on coordinating the management of transboundary water resources during the upcoming irrigation season and ensuring stable water supply across the region.
The meeting was attended by Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources Shavkat Khamrayev, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, as well as Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
The parties presented their proposals regarding the reservoir’s operating regime for the summer period. Particular attention was paid to water supply through the interstate Dostyk canal to meet the agricultural needs of the Maktaaral and Zhetysu districts of Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region.
During the discussions, the participants emphasized the need to continue consultations on certain provisions of the draft joint protocol. The negotiations focused on aligning the technical and organizational parameters of the future water use regime.
Following the meeting, the sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued coordination in the distribution of transboundary water resources, highlighting the importance of joint efforts to maintain a stable water management situation in the Syr Darya river basin and to take into account the interests of all countries involved.
