The State Customs Committee of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) of Azerbaijan is carrying out activities at border checkpoints to prevent swine flu (A/H1N1), the head of the State Committee, Asaf Mammadov, said at a board meeting dedicated to reviewing the results of 6 months activity.

Passengers and vehicles arriving from countries where the virus has been detected pass through special customs controls, Mammadov added.

According to Mammadov, as part of the preventive measures the State Committee members regularly receive information on countries where the A/H1N1virus has been detected. The committee also regularly consults with experts from the NAR Health Ministry. The checkpoints have strengthened the medical examination and passage through the disinfection barriers.

The committee is undertaking serious measures to prevent the import of animals from both American continents, Mammadov added.

Two cases of swine flu were discovered in Azerbaijan in July. One was a resident of Baku and another was from Ganja; they had arrived from France (on July 27) and from the United Kingdom (on July 29) respectively.

The main symptoms of A (H1N1) include a high fever, but, unlike seasonal flu, often absent is the cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and tiredness. Extreme diarrhea and vomiting are sometimes experienced. However, more commonly seen than with seasonal flu, signs of a more serious swine flu infection may include pneumonia and respiratory failure.
