Georgia, Iran discuss wheat supplies

Georgia's Minister of Agriculture Bakur Kvezereli and Iranian Ambassador Majid Saber have met in Tbilisi to discuss importing Iranian wheat to Georgia, the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture has said

Representatives of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture also attended the meeting.

Georgia is looking for new markets from which to import wheat after Russia suspended wheat exports last month. Ninety percent of Georgia's wheat normally comes from Russia.

The Georgian Ministry of Agriculture said that the parties also discussed plans for future cooperation in the agricultural sector. They discussed issues such as packaging of agricultural products, construction of greenhouses, fruit exports, development of livestock, meat production and meat plant construction.

The representatives of the Iranian agricultural department visiting Georgia met representatives of both the state and the private sector. Iran is also interested in animal husbandry in Georgia and more than 14,000 sheep have been exported from Georgia to Iran.
