Kazakhstan, Astana, August 10 / Trend K. Konyrova /

Iraq is interested in Kazakh grain supplies, plenipotentiary representative of Iraqi affairs in Kazakhstan, Khaldun Al-Jami, told Trend correspondent in Astana.

"We heard a lot about high quality of Kazakh wheat. Kazakh wheat has 25 percent of gluten," Khaldun Al-Jami said.

But lack of direct route complicates supply Iraq with Kazakh wheat.

"Lack of direct route for Kazakh grain is problem disturbing not only Iraq but other countries of our region now. I discussed this issue repeatedly with my colleagues-ambassadors of other Arabic countries. We agree in searching new routes," Iraqi diplomat said.

He reminded that at present, Iraqi demand for wheat hits 3.5 million tons per year. But there is insufficient own production due to water supply system was destroyed during war. Iraq buys grain, mainly, in the USA, Australia and Canada.

"It is known that Kazakh wheat in sufficient volumes is supplied to neighboring Iran via Caspian Sea through Aktau port. At present, Iran is our strategic partner. Old confrontation remained in the past. We get many goods via Iran. We do not rule out possible supplies of Kazakh grain via Iran," Khaldun Al-Jami said.
