By the end of 2010, the active storage capacity of two underground gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan will be raised to three billion cubic meters, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) head Rovnag Abdullayev said today

In 2009, Azerbaijan pumped about two billion cubic meters of gas to the Garadag and Kalmaz gas storages.

"In 2009, we reached an active gas storage capacity at the level of two billion cubic meters. Therefore, there was no problem in providing the republic with gas in 2010.  [...] According to the President's instructions, in 2010 gas storage capacity will be increased to three billion cubic meters," - Abdullayev said.

According to him, given this, operations in the Kalmaz, as well as in the Garadag gas storages are underway.  These operations envisage installation of new compressor stations, laying new gas pipelines and other infrastructure operations.

At present, construction of a new compressor station, with capacity of 7,000,000 cubic meters of gas per day, is underway in the Garadag gas storage. It is planned to put it into operation June 1. Currently, compressor station with capacity of 2.2 million cubic meters per day operates in the gas storage facility.

According to Abdullayev, at present, installation of five new compressors, which will be put into operation July 1, is underway. Thirteen compressors have been renovated in this storage facility.
