BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 22. Iran’s dams have increased their water reserves by 2 percent for about the first 4 months of the current water year (from September 23, 2023 to January 20, 2024), said Firouz Ghasemzadeh, an official of the Iran Water Resources Management Company, Trend reports.

According to him, the dams had about 20.3 billion cubic meters of water during that period.

The official added that this was 19.8 billion cubic meters they had in the same period of the previous Iranian year.

Ghasemzadeh said that the dams received 6.18 billion cubic meters of water inflow for about 4 months, which was an 11-percent decline from the previous Iranian year’s 6.93 billion cubic meters.

He also pointed out that the dams released 7.62 billion cubic meters of water during this period, which was 22 percent higher than the previous year’s 6.23 billion cubic meters.

The report comes after Iran experienced its worst drought in half a century last fall (from September 23 through December 21, 2022). Considering that Iran is in a dry region, the officials stress the need to cut down on and manage water use in various sectors.
