Turkmenistan's population boosts savings in local banks

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, May 30. The collective sum of savings held by the citizens in Turkmenistan's banks reached 3.46 billion Turkmen manat as of April 1 of this year, equivalent to $988 million, Trend reports.

According to the Central Bank of Turkmenistan, these figures are 23 percent more than on the same date last year (2.81 billion Turkmen manat, or $802 million).

Of the overall sum, deposits of the population in state commercial banks totaled 2.1 billion Turkmen manat ($600 million), reflecting 21 percent more than at the beginning of April 2023 (1.7 billion Turkmen manat, or $485 million).

At the same time, the share of deposits of the population in joint-stock commercial banks amounted to 1.3 billion Turkmen manat ($371 million), which is 30 percent more than compared to the same date in 2023 (1 billion Turkmen manat or $285 million).

Furthermore, deposits of the Turkmen population in branches of foreign banks amounted to 350 million Turkmen manat ($100 million), which is 31 percent less than at the beginning of April last year, when they amounted to 510 million Turkmen manat ($114 million).

Meanwhile, according to the Central Bank of Turkmenistan, the official exchange rate of the Turkmen manat against the US dollar on May 30, 2024, is set at 3.5 manat per USD.
