BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 25. The establishment of the Climate Technology Center in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) for Central Asia (CA) under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) will be discussed at COP29 in Baku, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko said, Trend reports.

He made the announcement at the pre-conference dialogue “Green energy transition in Turkmenistan: getting ready to the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement” within the framework of the international conference and exhibition “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan - 2024” in Ashgabat.

“For us, of course, there are several initiatives that we have outlined. Currently, there are two joint programs under consideration by the Turkmen government, and we hope that they will be approved. We have already mobilized funds for some of them, so we are optimistic about the future. We are very pleased that a positive decision may be taken in Baku to approve the idea of a Climate Technology Center for Central Asia under the auspices of the UN. In our view, this will be an important milestone in how the countries of the region will cooperate. Of course, we fully support the initiative of the Government of Turkmenistan in this direction. This idea has been put as a separate item on the COP29 agenda, and we hope that all countries, as decisions are taken by consensus, will support it. The Government of Turkmenistan has agreed to provide initial funding for the Center for three years, and we hope that the UN will make this Center a successful project for the long term,” he said.

Meanwhile, it is emphasized that the center's focus on climate change mitigation technologies is closely linked to the transition to green energy. The Center will serve as a platform for developing bankable green energy projects, building capacity to implement best practices in climate change mitigation, and sharing these experiences in the region.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
