Ismaylova/ "The number of Internet users totals 1.5mln people in Azerbaijan," Ali Abbasov, minister of communication and information technologies, said at the conference 2008 Presidential Election: New Prospects for Development" held in Baku on Dec.24
"In 2000-2007 the volume of Internet resources and virtual space was increased by twenty times in Azerbaijan. The economic potential of this sphere was increased by 4.5 times," minister said.
The annual growth of communication and information technologies sector makes up 33-35%, he said.
However, in spite of significant index of growth in this sphere, its share in GDP is small (1.6% in Jan.-Nov. according to the State Statistics Committee) and the main purpose of the Ministry of Communication is to increase this index in future, Abbasova said.
"The modern IT-infrastructure is planned to be created by realizing such social projects as "100 telephones for every 100 families" and People's Computer, minister said.
