TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, April 12. Uzbekistan’s Central Bank has announced plans to introduce a unified national standard for QR code payments in 2025, aiming to simplify cashless transactions across the country, Deputy Director of the Central Bank’s Payment Systems Department Miraziz Mirkhayotov said at a media dialogue, Trend reports.
Currently, retail locations often display multiple QR codes for different payment providers, causing confusion and inconvenience for consumers. The proposed solution would allow businesses to display a single QR code that supports transactions via any mobile wallet or payment application.
“Our goal is to develop a universal QR code standard. With just one code displayed at the point of sale, customers will be able to pay using their preferred mobile app or payment service," Miraziz Mirkhayotov said.
The Central Bank expects the development and implementation of the unified standard to take approximately one year. Once in place, the system is anticipated to enhance user experience, promote financial inclusion, and boost the adoption of digital payments nationwide.
Meanwhile, the QR code-based payments in Uzbekistan exceeded 441.7 billion soums ($34 million) in volume in 2024.
