Iran has the capacity to buy two million tons of wheat from Kazakhstan for domestic consumption and transit five million tons by rail to the Persian Gulf states, the State Commerce Organisation's managing director said.

"Iran has purchased some 500,000 tons of wheat from Kazakhstan in the current year," Abbas Qobadi said, adding that thanks to its strategic position, Iran has the potential to transit Kazakh wheat to the Persian Gulf region, the Fars News Agency reported. Iran's silos have the capacity to store some 11 million tons of wheat, he noted.

Iran is also ready to find new markets in the region for biscuits and macaroni which are produced from Kazakh wheat, Qobadi added.

Kazakhstan plans to build a railroad grain terminal in Iran, the Kazakh agriculture ministry said in April.

"The construction of rail grain terminal in Gorgan (Turkmen- Iranian border) is considered as a promising project for investment in the infrastructure of Kazakh grain export," the ministry said. The terminal in Gorgan will enable the increase of Kazakh grain exports to the Iranian market.
