The Libyan opposition is negotiating with government forces in the north-eastern city of Ajdabiya to allow the government troops to leave, on the condition they hand over their weapons to rebels, according to Libyan news websites, dpa reported.
"Gaddafi's brigades want to leave the city under the condition that they take their weapons and are guaranteed a safe way out," according to the Libyan Brnieq website. But rebels have insisted the only safe way out is by handing over the much-needed weapons.
Rebels are now in control of the southern gate of the city. But Gaddafi's forces still remain at the eastern gate, according to residents quoted in Libya al-Youm.
The opposition website also said that there was a humanitarian crisis in Ajdabiya after days of shelling by Gaddafi's forces, which hit a hospital and several houses. However, most residents have fled the city, according to a few people who have stayed behind to guard their property or fight.
