Former Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak is under "house arrest" in Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, said the country's military rulers on Monday, dpa reported.

The Higher Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces denied reports Mubarak had left to Saudi Arabia, a safe haven for other exiled former leaders, including Tunisia's ex-president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

"He and his family are under house arrest in Egypt," said the military statement, posted on the internet.

Mubarak, his wife Suzanne, and two sons Alaa and Gamal, have been in Sharm el-Sheikh since he was ousted from power February 11 after 18 days of nationwide protests demanding he step down.

This comes after the country's attorney general slapped a travel ban and an asset freeze on Mubarak, who was toppled from his post after nearly 28 years in power by popular revolt last month
