US: Defection of Libyan foreign minister shows regime "crumbling"

The defection of Libyan foreign minister Musa Kusa to Britain marks a clear sign that Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi is losing the support of his inner-most confidants, the White House said Thursday.

"If there was ever a sign that the inner circle surrounding Moamer Gaddafi is crumbling, it is the defection of Musa Kusa," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington, dpa reported.

Kusa defected to Britain late Wednesday after three decades as a Gaddafi loyalist. It marks one of the biggest defections since Western nations, with the support of the Arab League, launched a series of military strikes from the air to protect civilians and anti-government rebels in Libya.

The US and other countries have called for Gaddafi to resign and encouraged other members of his regime to stop obeying Gaddafi's orders.
