Benzion Netanyahu, the father of Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu, died early Monday morning at the age of 102, the prime minister's office announced.
A professor emeritus of history at Cornell University and expert on medieval Spanish Jewry, the elder Netanyahu was regarded as having a powerful influence on his son's worldview, DPA reported.
He was born in Poland in 1910, and emigrated with his family in 1920 to what was then British Mandate Palestine.
He and his wife Zila had three sons, one of whom was killed during Israel's 1976 rescue of hijacked Jewish hostages in Uganda.
