US urges UN Security Council to put more pressure on Syria

The UN Security Council should increase pressure on the Syrian regime of President Bashir Assad to stop the violence against civilian protesters, the United States said Wednesday.

The 15-nation council was scheduled to meet later to be appraised of the situation in Syria one week after it took the first step to condemn Syria for the ongoing military repression against protesters, DPA reported.

Washington said more than 2,000 people had been killed in three months of popular unrest. Damascus countered that hundreds of its security people had also been killed in the violence.

"It is the view of the United States that Syria would be a better place without Assad," ambassador Susan Rice told reporters in remarks that are as close as to call for him to step down.
