Pakistan is to receive 10 million euros (14 million dollars) in flood aid from the European Union, the bloc's executive said Friday, dpa reported.
The southern province of Sindh has been hit hard by the floods caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains, which have killed 248, injured 578 and affected 5.74 million people, according to the latest official tally.
"Like last year, the torrential rains have caused massive floods. I had seen then, and I fear now, catastrophic consequences for the people, for their homes and crops," EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said in a statement.
In 2010, almost 2,000 people were killed by floods. In response, the EU provided 423 million euros in aid, followed up by 88 million euros more this year, the European Commission said.
"Our help is needed again and we will answer the call of the afflicted," said Georgieva.
