Former Germany international Bernd Schuster has resigned as coach of Besiktas, the Turkish club said Tuesday.
Schuster was quoted by Turkish media as saying he felt he could not be successful for the Istanbul team who are lying fourth in the league but crashed out of the Europa League to Dynamo Kiev in the round of 32, dpa reported.
Besiktas spokesperson Mete Duren said assistant manager Tayfur Havutcu would take over until the end of this season, according to a statement on the club website.
Schuster submitted his resignation "claiming that he could not help the team any further," the statement said.
It added that the club chairman, Yildirim Demiroren, tried to convince Schuster to stay, but the former Real Madrid coach "felt he did not have much to offer and insisted on his decision."
Schuster, 51, had signed a two-year contract with Beiktas in June 2010.
It was his eighth station as coach following spells at Fortuna Cologne, Cologne, Deportivo Xerez, Shakhtar Donetsk, Levante, Getafe and Real Madrid, leading Real to the Spanish league title in May 2008 before leaving in December that year.
