Azerbaijan, Baku, Apr. 7 / Trend A.Huseynbala /

No political force can compete with the ruling New Azerbaijan Party in the parliamentary elections, NAP Deputy Executive Secretary Mubariz Gurbanli said.

"Based on our surveys, the candidates from our party will be highly supported by voters," he told Trend today.

Azerbaijan will hold the parliamentary elections in the fall. The previous elections were held in November 2005. The elections use the majority system in Azerbaijan's 125 constituencies.

According to Gurbanli, there are several reasons why voters support the ruling party.

"First, the policies pursued by President Ilham Aliyev and his achievements contribute to a great amount of support for our party. This policy also helps us conduct campaigns. Second, while picking our candidates, we take into account their personality, their influence and their activities in the districts in which they're nominated."

Given these factors, the NAP predicts a success in the elections, Gurbanli said.

"But, of course, everything depends on the electorate," he added.

Regarding the number of seats the NAP may win, Gurbanli did not name a specific figure.

"Like every party, we also intend to retain our seats in the parliament. We will work for even larger seats. We will fight for the maximum number of seats," he said.

The NAP was established by Nakhchivan Parliamentary Speaker Heydar Aliyev in 1992. President Ilham Aliyev now chairs the party, which has ruled the country for 17 years.
