ASTANA, Kazakhstan, March 26. In order to minimize the environmental impact, subsoil users in Kazakhstan are working on the management of industrial waste and oil sludge in compliance with environmental legislation, standards, and regulations, said Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov at a government meeting, Trend reports.

According to him, in Kazakhstan, technologies are specifically used to minimize the volume of waste generated during extraction, to recycle waste, or to use it in other industries.

"On a regular basis, measures are taken to prevent the formation of oil sludge. As it forms, it is collected and processed either by the company's own resources or with the involvement of specialized organizations; disposal of oil sludge is not permitted. Oil sludge generated during production is immediately sent for processing or disposal, bypassing the accumulation stage," noted Akkenzhenov.

He also added that, JSC "NC "KazMunayGas" is carrying out work on the disposal of historical oil-containing waste and cleaning contaminated land at the facilities of the companies Karazhanbasmunai, Ozenmunaigas, Mangistaumunaigas, and Embamunaigas.

From 2018 to 2024, about 4.5 million tons of historical oil waste have been processed in Kazakhstan, with approximately 1 million tons in 2024 alone.
