Azerbaijan, Baku, Apr. 2 / Trend E.Ismayilov /
The new, third line of the Baku Metro will meet all modern requirements and standards, Baku Metro head Tagi Ahmadov said.
The line's first stations are Memar Ajami-2 and Auto. Their construction is underway, Ahmadov said.
"All of our stations were built earlier in accordance with the Soviet system and therefore they have shortcomings, but the new line will meet all modern requirements, especially, for use by the handicapped and the vision impaired," Ahmadov said.
According to the metro head, unlike other lines, the tunnel's diameter will run 5.8 meters with a station platform fit for seven cars. The platforms of other lines only fit five.
By the end of the year, the metro tunnel construction will commence by the German company Herrenknecht.
"This matter has been entrusted to Metrostroy, which already held talks and signed contracts to allow the new installation for drilling tunnels by late 2010," Ahmadov said.
The Baku Metro has functioned since 1967 and has 22 stations.
