The EU welcomes the positive steps taken by the Kyrgyz Republic to further reform the Criminal Code and commends in particular the decriminalization of libel, press-service reports.
The EU trusts that this measure will make a positive contribution to greater respect for the freedom of the media as well as responsible media reporting at this important moment of a Presidential campaign.
As the first country in Central Asia to decriminalize libel, the Kyrgyz Republic has set a good example in the region and for other OSCE states.
The EU will continue to support the Kyrgyz Republic in its efforts to strengthen the democratic process in the country, in particular the implementation of legal reforms. The EU looks forward to its implementation and to further steps in this regard.
