The Libyan transitional government criticized Algeria for taking in family members of toppled Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, broadcaster Al Jazeera reported Monday.

"This is an act of aggression against the Libyan people and its hopes," information minister Mohammed Schammam said, dpa reported.

Gaddafi's wife and three of his children had arrived in Algiers, Algeria's foreign ministry confirmed.

Safia and three of Gaddafi's eight children - his daughter Aicha and two sons Hannibal and Mohamed - crossed the Libyan-Algerian border at 845 am (0745 GMT), Algeria's official APS news agency quoted the foreign ministry as saying in a statement.

"We will use every legal means we have to retrieve these criminals and bring them to justice," Schammam said.

He also warned anyone who gives refuge to Gaddafi, whose whereabouts have been unknown for days since the rebels got the upper hand in Tripoli.

Anyone who offers him refuge is an "enemy of the Libyan people," he said.
