ASTANA, Kazakhstan, July 3. Technological tests of the new thermal power plant at the KMG "Petromidia" refinery (a subsidiary of KazMunayGas) in Romania have been completed, Trend reports via KazMunayGas.
According to the information, commissioning tests and
verification of compliance with technical requirements for two gas
turbines of the new CHP (combined heat and power plant) operating
in cogeneration mode were conducted from February to June of this
year.
The final test results were reviewed by Bulat Zakirov, Deputy
Chairman of the Management Board of "KazMunayGas," and Bogdan-Gruie
Ivan, Minister of Energy of Romania. The acceptance of the test
results was also attended by Yerlik Ali, Ambassador of the Republic
of Kazakhstan to Romania, and the management of KMG International
(Rompetrol).
“The project to build an in-house CHP plant for the Petromidia refinery is the result of many years of joint work by engineers, designers, and specialists from Romania, Kazakhstan, and Türkiye. The CHP will reduce the energy dependence of the Petromidia refinery, optimize costs, ensure reliable uninterrupted supplies of electricity and steam, and strengthen strategic control over energy supply within the KMG International Group of companies,” noted Bulat Zakirov.
Moreover, in March and April of this year, an important milestone was achieved when two SGT-750 turbines were fully synchronized with the national energy system in all configurations and began actual electricity production. Since the start of testing, more than 11,000 MWh of electricity have been produced for the refinery’s needs, and from July 2025, steam production will begin in the waste heat boilers.
Currently, the CHP is operated by a joint project team consisting of representatives of the contractor and companies supplying the main equipment (gas turbines, boilers, automatic control system units, etc.). The final commissioning is scheduled for the end of August this year after obtaining certificates and permits from the relevant Romanian government authorities.
The CHP will produce about 80 MWh, fully covering the energy needs of the Petromidia refinery site (60–70 MWh), and will also supply up to 180 tons per hour of process steam to meet peak consumption needs. Overall, the project will reduce electricity costs by 43 percent and will become a source of additional income for the KMG International group.
