BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 4. The European company Gastrade S.A. announced that commercial operations at the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal - Alexandroupolis LNG - will begin on October 1, 2024, which is the start of the new "Gas Year" (the period of the "Gas Year" is considered to be from October through October), Trend reports via Gastrade S.A.
“Commissioning the facility into commercial operation will enhance Greece's role as an energy hub and provide diversification of gas sources for the EU for the energy security of Southeastern and Central European countries,“ the information notes.
The information also says that the launch of Alexandroupolis LNG will contribute to the expansion and strengthening of the prospects of the Vertical Gas Corridor.
The Alexandroupolis LNG terminal was supposed to be commissioned in the first half of the year, but the launch was delayed due to technical problems.
“Following the results of system testing and successful completion of all commissioning tests, we are pleased to announce that commercial operations at this new LNG terminal will commence on October 1,” Gastrade S.A. noted.
The LNG terminal is located in the northern Aegean Sea.
Its operator is Gatsrade, a company established by Copelouzou, DEPA, DESFA, GasLog, and Bulgarian Bulgartransgaz.
The total throughput capacity of this new terminal is 5.5 bcm of gas per year (maximum shipment of 22 million cubic meters per day).
Gas from the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal is to be delivered to consumers in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia.
Alexandroupolis LNG complements Europe's gas transportation network (GTN) structure along with: the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector Gas Pipeline (IGP); the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), part of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC, which will supply gas from Azerbaijan to Europe from 2020); and projects to expand underground gas storage facilities (UGS) in Europe.
To note, Alexandroupolis LNG is to be linked to the above infrastructure and is aimed at ensuring the EU's energy security.
