Former Iranian member of parliament arrested for espionage

A former member of the Iranian parliament has been arrested by national security officers and charged with spying for European countries.

"Former member of parliament Ali Nazari was arrested for espionage on Feb. 23. He is being held at Evin Prison in Tehran," a member of parliament who asked to remain anonymous said.

Nazari was a reformist elected to parliament by the Arak party.

His arrest was made public by a newspaper owned by the ruling Usulgara party.

The reason for Nazari's arrest was announced today.

Nazari is a supporter of former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami.
