The UN Security Council met Wednesday to discuss the situation in Syria while diplomatic activities were heating up to pressure the government of President Bashir al Assad to end its deadly repression of protesters, dpa reported.
The 15-nation council received a fresh report on latest developments in Syria from UN undersecretary general for political affairs, B Lynn Pascoe, which provided the background for discussion.
Council members provided little information about what action they would take during the session. Efforts to work out a draft statement to condemn Damascus's military crackdown on protesters have been inconclusive with one UN diplomat saying "four or five" drafts were still floating around.
On Tuesday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "utterly condemned" the crackdown that has killed hundreds of civilians in Syria and demanded an investigation, a move backed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.
The UN Human Rights Council is scheduled to hold a special session on Friday in Geneva for the purpose of discussing an international investigation on Syria's harsh treatment of the protesters.
