Egyptian army launches military operations in Sinai

The Egyptian army launched military operations against radical Islamists in the Sinai Peninsula this morning, Egyptian television channel "Nil" reported.

Some 1,500 soldiers and 500 special police units are involved in the operations against the radical Islamists. Military operations are being conducted near the towns Refah and Ari.

One radical Islamist was killed and 20 arrested during the operations.
Israel sent two warships to the Red Sea to assist the Egyptian army, "Nil" television channel reported.

After the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak on Jan. 25, the majority of the country's radical Islamist groups concentrated in the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.
